From Waste Gas to Reagent

This cover was inspired by an article that describes a way to capture fluoroform, a greenhouse gas produced as industrial waste, and turn it into a useable material that are easier and safer to handle. The authors used a MOF called MIL-160, which contains spaces that strongly trap fluoroform while largely excluding other gases. This allows the gas to be collected even when it is present in low concentrations or mixed with other industrial gases.

The trapped fluoroform can remain inside the material for months, especially when stored in a refrigerator or freezer. When the material is added to a liquid reaction mixture, it releases the gas in a controlled way. This avoids the difficulties of working directly with a gas and gives more consistent amounts for chemical reactions.

The authors showed that the stored fluoroform can add trifluoromethyl groups to a range of molecules, including compounds related to medicines and other valuable chemicals. Overall, the work combines greenhouse-gas capture, storage, and chemical reuse in one process.
