Fungal Rad Shield

The article that I illustrated here looks at a fungus that seems to grow well in high-radiation settings and asks whether it could help block some of that radiation in space. The team sent it to the International Space Station, grew it on a small agar plate, and compared its growth and radiation exposure with a control side that had no fungus.

They found that the fungus covered the plate faster in orbit than similar samples on Earth, and that the side with fungus showed slightly lower radiation readings than the control side. The difference was small, but the authors say it suggests the fungus may help reduce radiation exposure, probably because of the dark pigment in its cells.

Living materials could one day be grown in space to help protect crews on long missions, instead of bringing everything from Earth. The study does not prove the fungus is a complete shield, but it shows that biological material like this may be part of future radiation protection systems.
