Painting MOFs

This cover is the official cover for Material Horizons, Vol. 13 Num. 15. It lllustrates an article that looks at how two MOFs react when exposed to an electron beam. The team tracked how the structures changed over time and found that the beam can either slightly reshape the material or eventually break it apart, depending on the chemistry of the building blocks.

One material, Zn-TCPP, first reorganized in a way that briefly strengthened some parts of its crystal pattern before the structure began to collapse at higher exposure. The other material, Zn2(bim)4, did not go through that intermediate stage and instead steadily lost order until it became amorphous, meaning it no longer had a regular crystal structure.

The main goal was to learn how much electron-beam exposure these materials can tolerate before damage starts. The results give practical dose limits for imaging, patterning, and defect creation, which could help people use these materials more safely in electron microscopy and device fabrication.
